Biden signs gun safety bill into law

On June 25, 2022 President Biden on signed into law the first major gun safety legislation passed by Congress in nearly 30 years.

The Safer Communities Act signed Saturday by President Joe Biden will change legislation around guns across the country.

The signing comes just over a month after the mass shooting at a Texas elementary school killed 19 children and two adults. That attack came 10 days after a racist mass shooting at a Buffalo, N.Y., supermarket killed 10 African Americans.

The legislation, which passed the House 234-193 Friday night following Senate approval Thursday, includes incentives for states to pass so-called red flag laws that allow groups to petition courts to remove weapons from people deemed a threat to themselves or others.

In addition, the bill expands an existing law that prevents people convicted of domestic abuse from owning a gun to include dating partners rather than just spouses and former spouses.

It also expands background checks on people between the ages of 18 and 21 seeking to buy a gun.

The National Rifle Association says it opposes the bill.  Further, Wisconsin Gun Owners Inc. said in a statement that the organization opposes the act, saying, “WGO was shocked to find that there were no actual moves to arm or train willing teachers or harden schools against mass shooters.” The organization went on to say the background checks create a “second class of gun buyers.”

As usual, a Democrat Controlled Congress is reacting on emotion by passing laws that will impact lawful gun owners while doing nothing to help with mass shootings or crime.  Further, these red flag law are an ominous first step in stripping gun owners of their rights and Wisconsin citizens should be concerned about the overreaching nature of this law.

It is noteworthy that Biden's action also comes just days after the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark decision saying there is a constitutional right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense, striking down a New York law that restricted concealed carry.  Maybe the Court will do likewise with this law.
